"Addressable or conventional?" is the first question on almost every fire alarm enquiry. Both detect fire reliably when designed and installed correctly — the difference is in how precisely they locate it, how they are wired, and what they cost to own. Here is a practical comparison for Indian buildings.

Conventional: simple, zone-based

A conventional system divides the building into zones (e.g. "Ground Floor", "Basement"). When a detector activates, the panel tells you the zone, not the exact device. It is cost-effective for small, simple premises — a shop, a small office, a single floor — where a zone is small enough to search quickly. The trade-offs: more cabling (each zone is a separate circuit back to the panel), and slower fault-finding because you cannot see individual devices.

Addressable: pinpoint location and intelligence

In an addressable system, every detector, call point and module has a unique address on a loop. The panel shows you exactly which device has activated — "Smoke detector, 3rd floor, Room 312" — which saves critical minutes during a real event and makes routine testing far easier. A single loop can carry hundreds of devices wired in one run, reducing cable. Addressable systems also report dirty or faulty detectors before they cause false alarms. For anything beyond a small building, addressable is now the default — and it is what standards-driven projects expect.

Cost and maintenance over the life of the system

A simple rule of thumb
